The St Vincent de Paul Society, was founded in Paris in the 1830s by university students lead by Frederic Ozanam. They responded to the challenge of atheist friends by demonstrating their faith by means of practical Christianity. They started by distributing firewood to the poor in Paris in a particularly cold winter, and from there went on to work among the sick and the poor. They chose the name St Vincent de Paul, inspired by this French parish priest who was known for his care of the needy. From there the SVP developed and spread to over 100 countries around the world.

The SVP Conference in Totnes has been active since the early 1990s, and the current members would welcome new members to enable us to extend our work. Membership involves attending a short meeting once every month, and a commitment to undertake regular visits to a needy person, depending on what you can manage. We also raise funds to support the needy in this parish and to meet our financial commitment to support the work of our twinned SVP Conference in India.

One of the permanent boxes at the back of the Church is dedicated to the SVP, so you can make donations whenever you wish - every little helps. If you know of any sick or needy person who could do with some help or a visit, please let us know through Father Kristian. If you are interested in joining us, please speak to Mike Zollo at any time. If you cannot help, please pray for us and our work.
