Winter Youth rally – Plymouth

Youngsters from across the Diocese travelled recently to Plymouth for a Winter Youth Rally, which culminated in an enjoyable Youth Mass with Father Trevor at the Plymouth University Catholic Chaplaincy. The day began with over 50 young Catholics & their adult helpers taking to the ice at Plymouth Pavilions. However, it seemed it was the youngsters who were doing the ‘helping’ as many of the adults floundered hopelessly on the ice rink!

Energy levels remained high for the youngsters to take to the Pavilions Pool with much fun had plunging down the water slides whilst some of the adult helpers observed the mayhem from the comfort of the pool Jacuzzi.

The Winter Youth Rally follows on from the very successful & long running Summer Youth rallies held at St. Rita’s, Honiton, organized so impressively by the hard working Patrick Morris of the Okehampton parish. The Winter Youth rally attracted groups from Plymouth, Torbay, Totnes, Newton Abbot & even as far as Dorset amongst other areas. After all their activities the youngsters were grateful of an Indoor Bar-B Q at Plymouth University Chaplaincy, although for a short while the Dorset group were lost wandering around Plymouth!

Father Trevor celebrated an interesting Youth mass, involving the youngsters in novel ways, including being encouraged to stand on the pews at one point!

Peter Smith also took the opportunity to inform the young Catholics about World Youth Day in Madrid in 2011, telling them about his interesting & inspiring experience at the previous event in Sydney, Australia.

The event ended with a mass photo of the youngsters, with organizer Patrick Morris quite rightly at the centre of the group who were all grateful for his hard work in organizing such a positive & enjoyable event.

World Youth Day Quiz - St. Joseph’s Church Hall, Newton Abbot -  January 2010

The World Youth Day Fund raising Quiz at St.Joseph’s, Newton Abbot was won recently by the ‘Totnes Dragons’ team from St.Mary & St.George Parish in Totnes. Teams of all ages from across the Torbay Deanery met for this fun & friendly Quiz & helped raise £166.00 through generous donations  towards funding this Youth pilgrimage to Madrid in 2011. There was wide range of subjects entertainingly interspersed with bonus cryptic rounds & other tests of skill & knowledge. Bonus points were also available for teams willing to sing various theme tunes, including ‘The Banana Splits’, although the quality of the singing was questionable at times, to say the least! Victory was secured by the ‘Totnes Dragons’ partly due to a perfect score on ‘Chocolate’ & which may have revealed one of their vices.

The Quiz was also an opportunity for parishes to meet from across the Torbay Deanery & to promote World Youth Day. Further activities & events are planned to help raise funds to help finance the young pilgrims (between 16 & 35 years age) & raise awareness further of this special bi-annual international opportunity.

The ‘Totnes Dragons’ promised to ‘host’ a return match in the near future & laid down a challenge for other parish quiz teams to come & challenge them… & have a good time meeting other parishes, all in a good cause for the youngsters of the Diocese.
